Event makeup starts with a timetable as much as a look. Whether you are getting ready for a wedding, a graduation or a family celebration, the artist needs to know when you must be ready, where you will be and what you want to feel like when you leave the chair.
Look for relevant portfolio examples
Search for work that resembles the finish you prefer: understated, luminous, full coverage or a more dramatic eye. Look for a range of skin tones and lighting conditions rather than relying on a heavily edited close-up.
Ask whether the photographs show the artist’s own work. If several artists work under one business name, confirm who will attend. The portfolio should help you understand the work of the person you are actually booking.
Describe the occasion and the look
Send the event date, location and ready-by time in your first message. Mention whether the booking is for one person or a group. If possible, include a photograph of your outfit or its colours and a couple of makeup references.
Be specific about what you like. “I like this eye look but want a softer lip” gives the artist more direction than “something natural.” Tell them about product preferences or concerns you want to discuss before booking; a consultation is the place to ask what information they need from you.
Understand the package
Ask whether the quote includes travel, lashes, a trial, touch-ups or any additional person. If a trial is offered, clarify whether it is a separate appointment and cost. Do not assume hair styling is included in a makeup package.
For group bookings, agree the order of appointments and the total preparation time. Leave space in the schedule for dressing, photographs and travel rather than setting the makeup finish time equal to the event start time.
Put the agreement in one message
Before paying a deposit, ask the provider to confirm the artist’s name, date, address, arrival time, package, total price and cancellation terms. Keep that confirmation somewhere easy to find.
A good brief also leaves room for the artist’s practical suggestions. You can discuss alternatives without losing sight of the look and budget you originally agreed. Use Afrosouq to discover independent providers, then make those final arrangements directly with the artist.
