A portfolio photograph has a practical job: show a potential customer what you can do. A nail technician needs the design to be visible. A braider may want to show parting and the finished length. A tailor needs a view of the garment’s shape as well as the fabric details.
Show the result clearly
Choose an uncluttered background and a position where the work is easy to see. Keep the camera steady, check focus and review the image before your customer leaves. A photograph that looks fine as a small thumbnail may be too blurred when opened.
Capture a wider view and a detail view where that helps explain the work. A makeup portfolio might include the full look and a closer view of the eyes. A handmade product may need a view that makes its size or construction easier to understand.
Keep the presentation honest
Avoid edits that substantially change the colour, texture or finish you delivered. Customers use these images to set expectations. If you use an inspiration photograph, label it clearly and do not present someone else’s work as your own.
Aim for a consistent set rather than identical photographs. Different examples can show your range, but each image should still have an obvious subject and a useful purpose.
Ask before sharing
Agree with the customer whether you may photograph and publish the work. A customer accepting an appointment is not the same as giving permission to appear in your advertising. Discuss whether they are comfortable with their face appearing or would prefer a tighter crop that shows only the work.
Check the background for private details such as addresses, documents or other people. Keep any permissions and restrictions with your own records so you can respond if the customer later asks about a photograph.
Choose a small, useful collection
Afrosouq supports up to six photos per listing. Choose your strongest representative example as the cover, then add photographs that answer different questions. Six near-identical angles are usually less helpful than a clear overall result and a few relevant details.
Use photographs from the service you are advertising. If your listing is for braids, make those the focus; another offering can have its own listing. Update the gallery as your work develops so the portfolio continues to represent what a new customer can actually request.
